Hawaii Timelapse with the Canon XA10

Just got back from a week in Beijing and ten days in Hawaii and I managed to get quite a bit of video footage that I’m now (slowly) in the process of editing. In the meantime, I took the opportunity to do some quick timelapse filming from the hotel balcony in Honolulu, Hawaii and as these are much quicker to edit, I’ve decided to post these up first.

I’ve put all the timelapse shots together but if you want to see slighter slower versions (with different music) of each of the clips you can see them at:

I’ll post some more when I finish doing all the editing 🙂

    Hi Pete

Like your work. I also have an XA10 which I use to shoot local football games.

Just wondering with the time lapse what setting you use for exposure etc ,, is it all on auto?

    Cheers

Thanks for your comments, Ash, much appreciated. Hope you’re finding the XA10 useful for filming your football games (although you’ll no doubt be checking out the coming XA25 as I heard it will have a x20 zoom which will be ideal for filming football close-ups). I normally leave the exposure on automatic as I don’t tend to stick around while I’m filming as a typical shot may last as long as two hours. So far auto has worked pretty well. I make sure I remember to put it on manual focus if I’m filming through a window though otherwise the changing lighting conditions can trick the auto focus into focusing on the window instead of the scene (especially if the windows are dirty!), which can ruin the whole shot .

ok thanks, the manual focus makes sense.

Your right about the XA20/5 I almost committed to the XF305 but read on a blog someone talking about an XA10 “big brother” in the wings so held off. Liooking forward to getting my hands on one (XA20/5).

      Cheers

    Hi there,

Thanks for the great post. I have a xa10 and am trying to figure out how to shoot a time lapse. The other forums I’ve read say that people have created the time lapse during editing. Could you tell me how you did it?

    Thanks,
    D

Hi D, glad you liked the post – I haven’t been very active recently so I’m surprised anyone’s still looking at the site. Hope you’re enjoying your XA10 – it’s a great little camcorder. I’ve been doing my timelapse the hard way – ie I just filmed for extended periods of time (usually 1-2 hours) and then I speed it up (sometimes a couple of times) in iMovie (you can speed things up by almost 2000% and if that isn’t enough you just export, then re-import and repeat the whole speeding up process). If I’m doing timelapse, I’ll usually set the record bit-rate to 5bpm rather than max resolution as it makes it easier to download – max resolution would take way longer. Hope that helps a bit. :-))

Hi there and thanks so much for your reply. It does help. I couldn’t find a way to set a timer and was wondering if there was another way besides just speeding up. Great work, look forward to seeing more.
