Peng Chau Island at Chinese New Year

I’ve been inactive for quite a while after the mad rush of filming and editing that I did following the trip to New Zealand and Sydney over the summer, but I finally dusted off my Canon XA10 over the Chinese New Year holidays and took some shots over on Peng Chau Island; my favourite weekend spot to relax!

I’ve got a trip to Beijing coming up in March followed but a short holiday to Hawaii so hopefully that will give me plenty of opportunity to get out and about with the XA10 and get some more footage, especially as Beijing is particularly photogenic (see some very old footage I did in 1997, using one of the first JVC digital cameras, which I’ve uploaded at Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy5O0-IbbXY). I went to Hawaii in 2007 but for some reason didn’t take my camcorder and just took pictures but I hope to rectify that mistake this time round, so watch this space!

Black Hole Rising with the Canon XA10

I was experimenting again with some timelapse video and took some cool shots of the sun behind some clouds (again from my office window). Once again, I forgot to turn off the autofocus and ever time the sun came out from behind the clouds the camera focused on the (dirty) window instead which, whilst giving some atristic and impressionistic images, tended to spoil the overall timelapse effect.

Eventually I cut the out-of-focus bits out but after my earlier test video of iMovie effects, I decided to render the clip with the X-Ray effect and that really brought the sun and cloud effects out so that it looked (almost!) like I was  filming an interstellar black hole rather than the sun. I really should start thinking about making that Sci-Fi movie that I mentioned in a previous post!

Dawn till Dusk Timelapse with the Canon XA10

As I had to work late the other night, it was a good opportunity to do some late evening filming and I even got up early enough to set the camera up for a nice dawn timelapse. The downside is that the office windows could do with a wash and this rather affected (and spoiled) the dawn shots as once the sun came up all you could see were the dirt stains on the window.

iMovie Effects Compared with Canon XA10 Timelapse

The weather has been fairly changeable here recently in Hong Kong so I finally remembered to bring my XA10 into work so that I could catch some of the amazing cloud formations from my office window.

Yesterday I managed to catch a rain cloud coming over Central, Hong Kong, and decided to see how it would look if I used some of the different video effects you get in iMovie. You can see some of the results below in case you want to try out the same effects yourself. I quite like the X-Ray and Negative effects, which may lend themselves to doing a short sci-fi film in and around Hong Kong.

Canon XA10 at Lake Rotorua and Huka Falls, Taupo, New Zealand

Here are a couple more short clips from the recent trip to New Zealand. The first clip was taken at Lake Rotorua, a very photogenic location.

The second clip was taken at Huka Falls, near to Taupo.

One thing’s for sure: you don’t want to fall into the waters at this location!

Canon XA10 Sydney Scenes

Now that I’ve finally finished editing the holiday video, I’ve had a bit more time to put together a few of the better clips from my recent visit to Sydney. As you’ll see, I have a bit of a fixation with filming pidgeons – even though they are generally less cooperative than I’d like. It was also a good chance to test the Canon XA10’s depth of field, though, and some of the close-up pidgeon shots came out quite nice and sharp with a gently blurred background. The effect would probably have been better if I’d used a DSLR but I’ve never really liked the form factor of the DSLRs and much prefer using my Canon XA10 for run and gun shooting. I pretty much did all the shots hand held and would have preferred some more tripod shots but I got fed up lugging it around everywhere (even though it’s a pretty lightweight Manfotto travel tripod). One handy feature with the Canon XA10 is the powered stabiliser so I use it for short tracking shots that (sort of) look as though I’ve used a slider (but without the rigmarole of having to carry one around with me). If the shot doesn’t quite seem smooth enough, it’s easy enough to add a little extra stabilisation in iMovie. As long as the shot isn’t too long (say, around 2-3 seconds), then it pretty much does the trick.

Canon XA10 on Peng Chau Island, Hong Kong

I was just looking through some of my old Vimeo footage and noticed that I hadn’t included one of the first videos I shot with my Canon XA10 that I filmed in Peng Chau, a small island close to where I live in Discovery Bay (and easily accessible by ferry from the Central Piers). Peng Chau is a great place to spend the day as it’s nice and peaceful with lots of photogenic opportunities. The foods not bad at the small dim sum restaurant next to the pier either!

Canon XA10 Sydney Timelapse – Extended Version

Here’s an extended version of the timelapse I took with the Canon XA10 while I was in Sydney.

The whole thing was filmed over three successive days from the balcony of my hotel, all at 5 bpms, and then speeded up several times, without any clour correction or effects. As with most of my footage, I’ve been using royalty free music from the Music 2 Hues CD collection. While filming the first clip, it started to really pour down so I was lucky that my Canon XA10 didn’t get wet in the process!

On the Whanganui River Steamboat with the Canon XA10

I’ve pretty much finished most of the editing for the New Zealand trip and managed to whittle down three hours of footage into a more reasonable 90 minute holiday video.

While in Whanganui, I took the Steam River Boat excursion, which was a very interesting and worthwhile trip. There were some great photogenic opportunities so I’ve put together a short video which I’ve posted on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/47237660.

The next step will be to see what other video shorts I can put together to share with you from the trip.

New Gear for my Canon XA10

While I was in Sydney, I also took the chance to shop around for some video accessories, which are hard to find in Hong Kong and I’m not a big fan of having things shipped as I like to see them before I actually buy. I was interested in getting some upgraded microphone equipment but I was a bit shocked with the prices of the NTG mics and the poor exchange rate didn’t help either.

I already have a Rode Videomic (above) which works fine so I decided to stick with that and instead just bought a couple of additional key items, including a 3.5m extension cable for the mic, so that I can use it for interviews or when I need the mic close to the subject and not attached to the camera.

I also bought a deadcat for when I do outdoor filming or interviews.

The last accessory I bought was a Belkin car-mount which comes with 2 suction pads (instead of the one that I currently use for my Gopro) as this will probably ensure a much safer attachment and is also much more adjustable than the Gropro suction mount which is rather limited in its range of motion. I haven’t tested the car-mount with the Canon XA10 yet but it should be strong enough. I’ll keep you posted on how it comes out when I pluck up enough courage to try it out.
